We’re only 50 days out from the election. And we wanted to point out something that you won’t hear much, if anything, about in the news or on social media.

Through his effective leadership, Sheriff Chambers and his office have kept the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 out of the Sumner County Jail.

When the stay-at-home orders began on March 30, Sumner County Jail had approximately 150 inmates and 67 staff. Sumner County houses inmates from several jurisdictions across Sumner County and South East Kansas.

Sheriff Chambers relied on his experience and good working relationships with other Kansas Law Enforcement Officials and the Sumner County Health Department to enact new protocols to protect all inmates, staff, and subsequently, all Sumner County residents.

It is through the diligence and experience of Sheriff Chambers that, as of now, the Sumner County jail can boast zero COVID-19 cases.

May, 2020- Belle Plaine Letter to the Editor

Written by Scott Ramsey, Mulvane, KS

We are currently living in unprecedented times as we battle the COVID-19 virus. And while it is easy for that to consume everything we think and do (or don’t do), I feel it is important to not lose sight of the things in our lives that continue regardless of the latest news about the virus. One of those things is our upcoming elections from the Presidential election down to our local elected officials. It is important that we, as citizens, remain informed about our public officials running for election and re-election. Today I am specifically thinking of the Sumner County Sheriff. I am a lifelong resident of Sumner County, except for my college years out of state. I was born and raised in Mulvane and chose to raise my family here. I have a long background with our current Sumner County Sheriff, Darren Chambers. Darren and I both graduated from Mulvane High School. Darren has been in law enforcement in Sedgwick and Sumner County for 37 years. To say I was excited when Darren became our Sumner County Sheriff in 2011 would be an understatement. I knew we would be in good hands with him directing the safety and security of our county. Darren is a good, honest, and genuine man. He is loyal to his wife and family as well as the residents of Sumner County. His commitment to serve and protect while making improvements to his department is stellar. Darren’s professionalism has served us well in the last nine years, and he continues to look for ways to innovate. When we go to the polls this year to elect a Sheriff for Sumner County, we should reelect Darren Chambers. His breadth of experience and expertise is vital to Sumner County. I, for one, intend to help make sure that continues for many years to come. When you go to the polls in 2020 vote Darren Chambers for Sumner County Sheriff!
